An Indian Wedding in Portugal — Denise & Sanjiv

An Indian Wedding in Portugal — Denise & Sanjiv

By Anmol Gulati — India’s No.1 documentary wedding photographer (Reportage Awards).

Some weddings ask you to travel for them. Denise and Sanjiv chose an Indian wedding in Portugal — the pink baroque halls of Palácio do Correio-Mor near Lisbon, where old stone meets blue-and-white azulejo tile and a staircase seems built for a veil to fall down. An Indian wedding in Europe is a rare, quiet kind of grand: your rituals, your people, carried across a continent. We were there for all of it — unobtrusively, the way we always are.

The place. Palácio do Correio-Mor — a rose-coloured palace, a sculpted staircase, halls painted by hand. This is why couples search a destination first and a date second — you marry the setting as much as the day. As an Indian wedding photographer in Portugal, our job is restraint: let the architecture breathe, and wait for the people to fill it.

Getting ready, and the look. The smaller hours — a bride becoming herself in an ivory-and-gold gown and a veil the length of the staircase; a groom, quiet and composed; the blush of the groomsmen’s sherwanis against painted walls.

The arrival. Then the colour and the noise spill into the Portuguese street — the groom’s entrance, the bridal party in sea-glass green, the veil carried through cobbled lanes past rose-washed houses. India, unmistakably, on European soil.

The wedding. Under parasols and old stone at Palácio do Correio-Mor, Denise and Sanjiv married — the vows, a mother’s face, the glance the two of them stole when they thought no one was looking. We don’t stage these moments, we catch them.

We don’t pose your wedding. We feel it.

The celebration. And then Sintra by night — the reception at Valverde Sintra, Palácio de Seteais, its lit archway and a long candlelit table under the sky, a letter that began “My dear Husband,” sparklers, a toast, a dance floor that didn’t ask permission. A destination wedding knows how to end a day: loud, close, and completely theirs.

The close. That is what an Indian wedding in Europe can be — your traditions, your family, and two Portuguese palaces to hold them. If you’re dreaming of a destination wedding in Portugal, we would love to photograph it, the way it actually happens.
